You cannot apply for the practical driving test until you have passed the theory test. The theory test is taken at a different centre to the practical test. You cannot take the theory test before your 17th birthday.
You enter your answers on a touch-screen computer system.
The theory test is divided into two parts, the multiple choice element and the hazard perception element. You take both parts of the theory test on the same day.
In the multiple choice element there are 50 questions and you have 57 minutes to answer them
The pass mark is 43 correct out of 50.
In the hazard perception element there are 14 video clips and 15 scorable hazards (one of the clips contains two hazards to watch out for). Each video clip lasts 1 minute and you only get to view it once.
